Where to Watch: –

Some people may argue that this just a ballet movie, but those people have obviously never seen the movie.  Black Swan may start out as a seemingly typical film about a ballerina hoping to star in her first lead role, but it soon takes a much darker turn.  Natalie Portman does a beautiful job as the star, expertly portraying both the beauty and innocence of the White Swan early in the film and the sensual, nightmarish person she becomes as the Black Swan takes over.  As Nina’s hallucinations become more realistic, it’s impossible to tell reality from her growing insanity, and the visuals of the Swan Lake performance heighten the dramatic culmination of Nina’s breakdown.  There are a number of scenes in this film guaranteed to make your skin crawl, with a few instances of straight-up sexual assault and a handful of body horrors.  They’re mostly hallucinations, but that doesn’t make them any easier to watch.  This film walks the line between psychological thriller and blatant horror, but either way, it should definitely be on your to-watch list.
